Morphosis

The series Morphosis opens a space of transformation and reflects on the process of identity formation. The artist works with a figure that moves along the threshold between the body and the image of the self. He captures a moment in which the former sense of self disintegrates, while the new one has yet to take a stable form. This gradual and demanding transition is articulated through visual tension. The body is present, yet estranged—burdened by a transitional phase in which one must learn to inhabit one’s own skin anew.

Here, the body becomes a mutable site of identity and conflict. It functions as a mask onto which social expectations and gender roles are inscribed. The photographic cycle reveals the tension between an identity that is assigned and one that is actively constructed. The figures oscillate between acceptance and rejection of their own bodies. Identity fractures into layers and is reassembled again. Jan Škop renders present a state suspended between the social gaze and lived experience—between what is seen and what is lived.
